What role is drama said to play in education?

Young children when noticed are generally found to play act, when they are left on their own. It seems that drama may come naturally to everyone. Children often pretend to get into the role of daddy or mommy, to dash around like their superhero, to raise arms in victory while emulating favorite sports car, or others. Most children are said to come to formal education situation by going through imitative drama play and to have experienced few imaginative, self-directed, creative play.

By trying to tap into the natural interest noticed in drama play can help educators to achieve a way to provide students of every age to achieve an enjoyable and entertaining learning experience by which, they not just gain knowledge, but also develop most of the life skills. For instance, Drama group provides sufficient opportunity to people to have their co-operation skills to be honed. By learning to cope up with working styles and inevitable differences with regards to opinions, it becomes important especially if the project is to be made successful.

As story teller or play writer

By having organized planning and thinking, it becomes easy to synthesize facts, idea, personalities, events and attitudes. With practice, children learn to take into consideration sequencing the events, including the characters that are involved. By slowly maturing, children try to develop own story lines that can be used for play scripts in dramas, while honing their capability to visualize characters, events and settings that takes creative thinking as well as problem solving. 


As director

Although no individual is given responsibility to become ‘director’ of group drama play, someone inevitably emerges as leader of production. The person develops ideas as to how task is to be carried out and to imprint his interpretation on presentation. It is a skill which has to be encouraged, however, often this role officially requires decision making, communication and skills of interpretation to come to fore.

As an actor

Acting on different life set circumstances could lead towards a better understanding that another point of view is present which might have validity. For many, trying to learn to become a comfortable speaker or to perform before the audience can be a trial. Therefore, starting much early along with informal kind of drama play can assist children to ease into oral presentation. With students becoming accustomed towards performing, memorizing scripts and ad libs can be encouraged.
